1980년대 MTV 개막과 함께 연일 문화 혁신의 아이콘이자 대중음악 최고의 팝 황제 자리를 지켜온 마이클 잭슨. 그의 단 한 장의 역작을 꼽는 것은 역시나 무척 괴로운 일이지만 그럼에도 1982년 발매된 <Thriller>의 가치는 남다르다. 10개의 수록곡 중 싱글 커트 된 7곡 모두가 빌보드 싱글 차트 Top 10에 올랐으며 그중 2곡은 무려 정상에 안착한다. 음반 판매량은 가히 ‘No 범접’, ‘Only Number One’의 수치를 기록하는데 공식 집계된 전 세계 판매량이 6600만 장으로 불법 복제까지 포함하면 약 1억 2천여 장의 음반이 팔려나간 것으로 추산 된다. 백인 뮤지션의 뮤직비디오만 틀어주면 MTV 지하 공식을 깨부수고 혁신적 문워크로 대중을 사로잡은 ‘Billie jean’, 13분이 넘는 러닝 타임으로 공포, 기괴한 뮤직비디오를 선보인 ‘Thriller’, 팝 메탈도 춤이 가능함을 보여준 ‘Jump’ 의 주인장 밴 헤일런이 기타 연주한 ‘Beat it’은 밴드 폴 아웃 보이(Fall Out Boy)의 리메이크로 또 한 번 주목받았다. 잠깐잠깐, 서론이 너무 길어졌다. 음반은 수상작에 2천만 원의 상금이 수여되는 국제경쟁부문 영화 <마이클 잭슨 따라잡기Sheikh Jackson> 의 추천 작품이다. 신격화 동격화하는 마이클 잭슨의 죽음으로 패닉에 빠진 한 이슬람 지도자의 일상을 재미있게 풀어냈다. MJ 소개글 앞에서 나 역시 여전히 무력화되나 보다. 글이 길어져 죄송할 따름…. 그래도 좋은 걸 어떡해!!
